The study includes three different cases exploring the constitutive effects and political implications of norm critique as a concept and practice, with the aim to understand the practical and political consequences of the concept and to analyse implementations of norm critique as part of a more complex political development. Josefin Olsson is especially interested in how norm critical pedagogy, as a theoretical concept, is constructed and filled with meaning through narrative descriptions about its historical development and theoretical framework. While norm critique has developed into a well-used tool in the work against discrimination and for equal opportunities in Sweden it has also been subjected to extensive criticism. Mostly in the context of media discussion where the concept, from the political right, has been associated with a so called “gender ideology”. Outside the academic fields it is a controversial concept that positions its proponents on a left/feminist/liberal side on the political scale, and its critics on the right wing/nationalist/anti-gender side.

During the seminar, Josefin Olsson puts a special focus on the internal academic discussions and definitions of the concept of norm critique. Josefin presents some of the results of her study and raises the question of whether psychoanalytic feminist theory can contribute to norm critique.

Josefin Olsson is a PhD student in Gender Studies at Umeå University. Her main research interests concern feminist theory, feminist cultural studies, and Swedish gender equality. In her dissertation she explores the political implications of ‘norm-critique’ as a tool for social justice and change.

2025 Anmälan och zoomlänk 29 april

2023 Contact Lotta
ZoomSeminar/en/events/norm-critical-desire_12040349/2025-04-29T13:00:00+02:002025-04-29T14:30:00+02:00/en/events/medchem-seminar-series-karl-kochanowski_12072920/Medchem Seminar Series - Karl KochanowskiTitle: "Mapping the in vitro metabolic interaction network of a nasal microbiota community"Tue, 29 Apr 2025 15:15:00 +0200
Speaker:

Karl Kochanowski

IRTA-CReSA Animal Health Research Center, Barcelona, Spain, and guest researcher at IceLab

Title:

Mapping the in vitro metabolic interaction network of a nasal microbiota community

KB.E3.01 (Lilla hƶrsalen), KBCSeminar/en/events/medchem-seminar-series-karl-kochanowski_12072920/2025-04-29T15:15:00+02:002025-04-29T16:00:00+02:00/en/events/sara-pudas_12050983/±«³¾±šĆ„ Cognitive Science Seminar: Sara PudasThe ±«³¾±šĆ„ Cognitive Science Seminar invites you to a seminar with Sara Pudas, ±«³¾±šĆ„ University. Despite decades of brain aging research in humans, many questions remain. This talk will revisit one of the most intriguing and debated findings within the field of cognitive neuroscience of aging, namely the commonly observed increased functional brain activation in the frontal cortex of older adults. By presenting illustrative examples of studies conducted at the Umeå Centre for Functional Brain Imaging, along with other recent research, some of the main theoretical accounts of frontal overactivation will be explored. Additionally, some of the challenges and pitfalls inherent in cognitive and brain aging research will be highlighted. The talk will conclude with a brief discussion on some potential future directions in the field.

Bio:
Sara Pudas is an associate professor in psychology at Umeå University. In this talk, I focus on one such account, which holds that the characteristic feeling of unreality in derealization reflects a failure to experience perceptual objects and events as mind-independent. I argue that this view encounters conceptual difficulties, and I raise three objections that put its plausibility into question. I conclude by proposing a two-factor desideratum for theories of derealization, suggesting that experiential dimensions such as felt presence and unreality should not be presumed to attach solely to the perception of external objects.

About the seminar series

Learn more about the seminar series in Philosophy and upcoming events
HUM.H.119 (HD108)Seminar/en/events/fabiana-caserta_12036698/2025-04-30T13:15:00+02:002025-04-30T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/fraiday-ai-powered-materials-for-human-machine-interactions_12071652/#frAIday: AI-Powered Sensing Materials for Human-Machine InteractionsA #frAIday talk with Dr Liucheng Guo, about AI-Powered Sensing Materials for Next-Generation Human-Machine InteractionsFri, 02 May 2025 12:15:00 +0200
#frAIday hybrid
You can participate via Zoom or join us in Galaxen, Umeå University. It has the ability to reach uncharted regions in biological systems. Cryo-FIB milling is used to expose 100–250 nm thin sections (called lamella) in intact frozen cells and tissue. The process allows access into the cells for high-resolution cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) and structure determination of biomolecules in their native environment.

Webpage of Umeå Centre for Electron Microscopy (UCEM)

Registration: Sign up for the IRL seminar and reserve your free lunch (salad, drink, and a little sweet snack) by Friday, 2 May, 13:30:

/en/research/infrastructure/scilifelab/scilifelab-site-umea--kbc-infrastructure-seminar-series/

or follow online (registration is not required):

Meeting URL: https://umu.zoom.us/j/69390567429

Organisers: SciLifeLab Site Umeå and Chemical Biological Centre (KBC), Umeå

Glasburen, KBC, and ZoomSeminar/en/events/cryo-fib-sem-250506_12081397/2025-05-06T12:00:00+02:002025-05-06T13:00:00+02:00/en/events/survivance-of-indigenous-knowledges-and-lifeways-_12080388/Survivance of Indigenous Knowledges and Lifeways Laara Fitznor, internationally renowned Indigenous researcher, will give a digital lecture as part of the seminar series VƔrdduo 25 years.Tue, 06 May 2025 15:00:00 +0200
Welcome to a seminar with Laara Fitznor!

Survivance of Indigenous Knowledges and Lifeways for Future Generations Indigenous Wellness

Laara’s own description of the seminar:
In this seminar, I will highlight the guiding principles that I, as an Indigenous Scholar navigating multiple realities throughout my academic career, observed in the unfolding of their richness that we have as Indigenous peoples. The relations between features are often represented as networks, but the methods for analyzing these vary across fields and are often ad-hoc. These changes, or parts of them, were integrated into the Roman network and led to the introduction of new ideas, materials and flavours, some of which were adopted, adapted or further developed. In this paper, the dietary habits in the northern provinces of the Roman Empire are analysed on the basis of food plants. Archaeobotanical data was collected in an object-oriented relational geodatabase to enable comparisons and to obtain an up-to-date and very comprehensive dataset. The aim of the analysis is to identify plant-based dietary patterns of different social groups and their significance for coping with the new realities in the Roman world. Finally, it will discuss how the network of food plants in the region can be analysed and how this can contribute to a new understanding of the Roman economy.

About the seminar series

The Research Seminar Series in Archaeology and Environmental Archaeology presents and discusses current research in archaeology and environmental archaeology.
See more upcoming seminars in the series
Online in ZoomSeminar/en/events/patricia-vandorpe_12062443/2025-05-08T13:00:00+02:002025-05-08T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/firm-premiums-and-the-great-compression_12010651/Firm premiums and the great compressionCEDAR seminar with Jonatan Andersson, Department of Economic History, Uppsala University.Thu, 08 May 2025 13:00:00 +0200
Welcome to a CEDAR seminar with Jonatan Andersson, Department of Economic History, Uppsala University.

Firm premiums and the great compression: Evidence from a worker-employer linked database for Stockholm during the postwar period

During the postwar period, wage and income inequality declined dramatically in the Western world. Notably, Sweden transitioned from high levels of income inequality to becoming known as the world's most equal country. This project studies the role of firms and workers in this process. Using a machine-learning approach, we aim to construct a unique database containing individual-level data on income, firms, and addresses for Stockholm's population annually from 1940 to 1970 from combined tax and population registers. With this database, we can study how the income distribution evolved for employees within and between all companies in Stockholm and what drove this development.

We investigate three aspects related to the core investigation. First, the postwar period saw low unemployment rates, which strengthened workers’ bargaining power. This shift led to increased worker turnover rates and, allegedly, higher wages. We analyze this phenomenon using our linked worker-employer dataset. Second, today’s rising income inequality is largely driven by growing disparities in compensation between workers at different workplaces. We investigate whether the postwar period showed the opposite trend—declining workplace heterogeneity among workers. Third, the role of infrastructure investments in facilitating workplace mobility during the postwar period. We address this question by examining the 1950s rollout of the Stockholm metro and its impact on labor market outcomes for residents living close to and far from the metro stations.

All interested are welcome to participate. At the same time, reliable markers for improved diagnostics and therapeutic decisions are lacking. Growth of PCa is highly dependent on androgens, and hormone ablation therapy is a cornerstone of current therapeutic approaches. However, many PCa patients succumb to androgen-independent tumor growth in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Expression and activation of androgen receptor (AR) in these tumors is no longer dependent on androgen stimulation.

While the tumor-promoting role of androgens is well established, the role of thyroid hormones (THs), and lipid-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin D) is largely unresolved. These ligands exert their functions through specific nuclear receptors (NRs) which belong to a protein superfamily that form ligand-dependent homo- and heterodimers. The respective NRs - TRs, RARs and VDR - function as complexes together with the cognate dimerization partner retinoic X receptor (RXR) and nuclear coactivator (NcoA) or corepressor (NcoR) factors to bind to genomic DNA at specific motifs and regulate transcription.

Accumulating evidence indicates an additional growth stimulatory role of non-steroidal hormone NRs in PCa, which could play an essential role in the advanced or treatment-resistant PCa stage. Yet, their activities and interplay in PCa are unknown and warrant more investigation. A deeper understanding of the molecular details of the intersection of TH, lipid-soluble vitamin and steroid hormone NR action is vital to developing novel diagnostic/prognostic markers and identifying therapeutic targets in PCa.

This talk will focus on the role and crosstalk of NRs in PCa, with an emphasis on advanced and drug-resistant PCa entities. We analyze the abundance and cellular distribution of NRs and the genes they regulate, and study whether their effects are competetive or synergistic. We compare these findings with those in more aggressive PCa. Using PCa patient cohorts, we validate whether NR expression and top-regulated genes represent biomarkers or prognostic factors in PCa. NR-regulated gene patterns may have the potential to provide therapeutic targets that help to overcome treatment resistance. The findings may improve the treatment of patients not only with prostate cancer, but also with other hormone-dependent cancers.

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars: is a broad, open seminar series in life science that is arranged jointly.
Major groove, department of molecular Biology, Building 6LSeminar/en/events/integrated-biomedical-science-seminar-brigitte-hantusch_12063023/2025-05-09T14:00:00+02:002025-05-09T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/game-jam-on-campus-a-fun-weekend-for-those-who-want-to-create-and-play_12069259/Game Jam on Campus – a fun weekend for those who want to create and play!Do you love games, and have always wanted to try your hand at making one? One major problem caused by soil compaction is that it exerts water stress on roots as moisture release is reduced from the smaller soil pores. Despite its agronomic importance, how roots respond to compacted soil conditions at the cellular level remains unclear. Here, we pioneered the use of single-cell and spatial transcriptomics on rice roots grown in soils to delve into the cell-level mechanisms governing root responses to soil compaction. Through differential expression analysis comparing non-compacted and compacted soil-based single-cell transcriptomic data, we identified a significant up-regulation in the expression of genes responsible for water impermeable barrier formation in the outer root tissues (Exodermis). This gene up-regulation was induced by an enhanced biosynthesis of plant hormone, abscisic acid (ABA) and its release from the inner tissues (Phloem). The role of ABA in responses to soil compaction was further highlighted by the suppression of barrier formation in the exodermis in ABA-deficient rice mutants. In summary, our single cell resolution study revealed how root tissues coordinate to facilitate the retention of water in root tips during soil compaction stress.

https://mingyuanzhu.com/
"Lilla hƶrsalen" (Small lecture hall), KB.E3.01, KBC buildingSeminar/en/events/upsc-seminar-with-mingyuan-zhu_12076822/2025-05-13T14:00:00+02:002025-05-13T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/medchem-seminar-series-eliette-touati_12042577/Medchem Seminar Series - Eliette TouatiTitle: ā€œHelicobacter pylori and gastric oncogenesis: from molecular events to gastric cancer biomarkers discoveryā€Tue, 13 May 2025 15:15:00 +0200
Speaker:

Eliette Touati

Team Infection, Genotoxicity and Cancer, Department of Microbiology, Institut Pasteur Paris

Title:

Helicobacter pylori and gastric oncogenesis: from molecular events to gastric cancer biomarkers discovery

KB.E3.01 (Lilla hƶrsalen), KBCSeminar/en/events/medchem-seminar-series-eliette-touati_12042577/2025-05-13T15:15:00+02:002025-05-13T16:00:00+02:00/en/events/daniel-giberman_12036701/Philosophy: Daniel GibermanThe Research Seminar Series in Philosophy invites you to a seminar with Daniel Giberman, Gƶteborg.Wed, 14 May 2025 13:15:00 +0200
The Research Seminar Series in Philosophy invites you to a seminar with Daniel Giberman, Göteborg. This free event is open to all, with a particular invitation to students. Expect a lively presentation and discussion!

What do we mean by terraforming ecosystems?

Ricard Solé explores "terraforming ecosystems" as a method to restore and stabilize environments damaged by human activity. This approach uses synthetic biology to engineer organisms capable of rehabilitating ecosystems at risk of collapse due to climate change and overexploitation. By introducing specially designed organisms, the goal is to restore ecological balance and prevent catastrophic shifts.

For example, in arid regions, engineering native microbes to enhance water retention could support plant growth and combat desertification. This strategy focuses on using organisms already adapted to local conditions, reducing risks associated with introducing foreign species.

Solé's work combines ecology, synthetic biology, and complex systems science to develop interventions that can avert ecosystem tipping points. His research includes mathematical models that predict the outcomes of introducing engineered organisms, aiming for safe and effective ecological restoration.

In this lecture, Solé will discuss how synthetic biology can be applied to environmental conservation, focusing on innovative solutions to pressing ecological challenges.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of this page to register to attend this event. His work explores how critical theory can help us make sense of the complex entanglements between society, technology, and knowledge production—he will help us think through the theoretical underpinnings of collaborative research.

The seminar will focus on how critical theory—broadlyunderstood—can offer a useful common ground for researchers from different fields. Rather than trying to standardise disciplinary differences, we’ll be discussing how a shared theoretical orientation might help navigate them productively. Simon will draw on both classic and contemporary strands of critical theory, including insights from his work on AI, to show how these perspectives can be practically useful when designing and conducting transdisciplinary research.

The seminar is intended for researchers involved in (or curious about) interdisciplinary or cross-sector collaborations, regardless of disciplinary background.

After Simon’s talk, we’ll open the floor for discussion. The idea is to have a space for reflection and conversation, so bring your questions, your disciplinary baggage, and your research dilemmas.

When and where:

27th of May, 13:15 – 15:00, Galaxen (Universum)

This is an in-person event only. However, in the recent wake of feminist and postcolonial critiques, we see research and activism pointing out how these liberal norms have been intimately tangled up with national sentiments. Thus, turning into what is known as homo/femo-nationalism. A concept and societal figure that illuminate how gender equality and rights of LGBT+ people are colonized by national ideologies of superiority. At this seminar, Dr. Michael Nebeling Petersen (University of Copenhagen) and Prof. Lena Martinsson (Göteborg University) will share critical perspectives and approaches to study and disentangle homo/femo-nationalism in its various appearances in the Nordic welfare states. More specifically, we analyse four Finnish 'gangsta rap' videos and their lyrics by artists who have received considerable attention in the Finnish media during the past two years. While the media argue that we are facing a new situation of commodified gang violence mediated by ‘gangsta rap’ – or, to be precise, drill-influenced music, which has been termed as ‘gangsta’ by the media – our analysis, drawing on previous research in cultural criminology and hip hop studies, suggests that both the music and the criminal activities, as well as the responses to them, are similar to those observed in earlier US and UK research. However, what makes Finland a globally interesting case study in studying gangsta rap and their assumed connection to street gangs is i) a relatively small number of immigrants and people of colour, ii) substantial media attention based on official discourse and high trust in the authorities, and iii) the escalation of gang violence in the neighbouring Sweden and its anticipated trickle-down effect to Finland. We argue that, in exploring the complex interconnections between authenticity, crime and gang life, one needs a ‘placed’, street literate understanding, the lack of which may arbitrarily stigmatise certain groups of people and certain musical styles.
HUM.G.217 Seminar/en/events/seminar-erica-aberg_12058925/2025-05-28T13:15:00+02:002025-05-28T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/margherita-arcangeli-and-jean-nicod_12036717/Philosophy: Margherita Arcangeli and Jean NicodThe Research Seminar Series in Philosophy invites you to a seminar with Margherita Arcangeli and Jean Nicod.Wed, 28 May 2025 13:15:00 +0200
The Research Seminar Series in Philosophy invites you to a seminar with Margherita Arcangeli and Jean Nicod. You need no prior knowledge within natural sciences to take part in this ”journey in time” with focus on the natural history of the area. During the excursion, we will use paleoecology as a tool to explore the landscape development on campus. Paleoecology can be described as the study of earlier ecological and environmental changes, usually based on analyses of fossils, sedimentary depositions, and other physical remnants. The main factors that have shaped the landscape are glacial processes and land upheaval, which is reflected in today’s natural environment and our use of the landscape. The excursion will hopefully contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationships between geological, ecological, and human factors that have shaped the landscape around Umeå University.
